    Research Opportunities

Shaping the Preparation of Future Science and Mathematics
    Faculty at Undergraduate Institutions

The ASM Board of Education and Training is accepting applications from teams of academic departments who have formed a coalition to enhance the graduate training experience, especially as it prepares students for the diverse roles and responsibilities at undergraduate institutions. Specifically, the teams will be charged with developing national recommendations for preparing graduate students for the professoriate in the microbiological sciences. Strong collaborations among graduate departments in microbiology and undergraduate departments in the life sciences offer a unique experience for students to learn about faculty roles at colleges and universities with different missions and purposes. Successful teams will include adminstrators and faculty leaders from graduate departments in the microbiological sciences and two or more different kinds of predominantly undergraduate institutions with contrasting missions, student bodies and faculty responsibilities.

The three-year initiative builds on and extends the Preparing Future Faculty Program led by the Council of Graduate Schools and American Association of Colleges and Universities since 1993 with support from the Pew Charitable Trust. The new program specifically addresses science and mathematics education and is supported by the National Science Foundation. For more information, please contact EducationResources@asmusa.org
