The Biotechnology Center for Fuels and Chemicals at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) invites applications for a position in the area of lactic acid biocatalyst development. This project is directed at developing a low-cost, integrated lactic acid fermentation and separation process which will permit penetration of the petroleum-derived plastics market by polyactic acid (PLA), a versatile and biodegradable plastic. These positions offer challenging career opportunities with ample room for professional growth and development in a multidisciplinary team environment. We seek a motivated and broadly trained Microbial Physiologist/Molecular Biologist with a Ph.D. and 2 years postdoctoral training (or equivalent). Demonstrated achievement in the area of acid/base homeostasis and stress tolerance/adaptation, genetics and/or genetic engineering in lactic acid bacteria, especially Lactobacillus species, are required. Additional experience with comparative intermediary metabolism, continuous fermentations, and coupled separations technologies are desirable skills. The ability to produce results in a fast-paced, cooperative team environment, excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, and a willingness to assume a leadership position are essential for both of these positions. A doctoral degree is not required, but equivalent experience and a demonstrated track record of productivity in related areas, creativity, self-motivation, and a positive team attitude are essential. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is the premier institution in the U.S. for research, development, and deployment of new technologies based on renewable resources. NREL is a government-owned (U.S. Department of Energy), contractor-operated National Laboratory. Lab facilities are located at the foot of the Rocky Mountain front range, 15 miles west of Denver. NREL offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. For consideration, please send your résumé and cover letter (referencing position number 4200-131) to Ms. Janet King, Human Resources Office, mailcode 2712, NREL, 1617 Cole Blvd., Golden, CO, USA 80401-3393.
