ASM Members Receive Awards

A recent Current Topics article on ASM members who received major awards and honors (ASM News, January 2001, p. 11) failed to mention that Carl Woese, Stanley Falkow, and Bernard Moss are all Fellows of the American Academy of Microbiology

Clinical Microbiology Laboratories Can Directly Benefit Patients

The profile of Joan Barenfanger (ASM News, February 2001, p. 72-73) stated that Dr. Barenfanger was "one of the few M.D.'s to become certified by the American Board of Medical Microbiologists." This is incorrect; the name of the Board is the American Board of Medical Microbiology, and many M.D.'s hold certification by the ABMM.

Ancient Bacteria May Be Oldest Life Form

In a Current Topic on ancient bacteria (ASM News, January 2001, p. 7-8), the caption on the figure on page 8 of the two salt crystals is not correct. Fig. B is the crystal from which the ancient bacterium was isolated, but panel A shows a typical crystal that would have been rejected and not drilled for samples because of its faults. It is not two views of the same crystal.

ASM News regrets the errors.
